Weston Ranch punched its ticket into the quarterfinal of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II boys tennis tournament on Tuesday afternoon.

Weston Ranch’s No. 6 singles player Josh Gonzalez (7-6 [20-18], 6-1) picked up a critical point for the Cougars, who earned a 6-3 victory over McClatchy.

“(Gonzalez) played an amazing match and grinded out a first-set tiebreaker,” Weston Ranch head coach Jason Furtado said. “I feel like my team has got a second wind. We feel rejuvenated and can’t wait to get back to practice so we can prepare for our next match.”

Weston Ranch’s doubles teams swept its competition.

The Cougars’ No. 1 doubles tandem of Andre Albino and Mark Legaspi earned a 6-2, 6-7 [6-7], 6-3 victory. Ion Obiso and Tejpaul Bainiwal (No. 2 doubles) earned a three-set victory (6-1, 2-6, 6-2), while Jesse Nisperos and Andrew Gonser at No. 3 picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win.

Suhkman Singh (No. 2 singles), Chai Saepharn (No. 5) and Gonzalez (No. 6) tallied Weston Ranch’s three other points as Saepharn won his match in straight sets. The Cougars’ No. 1 singles player Kevin Yamayoshio lost his match, 6-4, 0-6, 4-6.

“My singles played well overall and put us in great position to win for our doubles,” Furtado said. “Just like all year, my doubles took care of business and finished like they’re expected to.”

Weston Ranch will play against Mira Loma at Mira Loma in the quarterfinals Monday at 3:30 p.m.

Mira Loma 7, Manteca 2

Mike Lopez and Yok-Jing Ma picked up a couple of points for Manteca as it ended its season falling short to Mira Loma on Tuesday.

Lopez won by default after his opponent was forced to retire due to a back injury. Ma picked up a three-set victory and won the tiebreaker 6-4. Manteca (10-4 Valley Oak League, 13-8 overall) was trailing 4-2 after the singles matches were done, leaving it a chance to perhaps sweep the doubles and advance.

“Overall it was a competitive match,” Manteca head coach Frank Fontana said. “I was pretty happy with our effort. It was a live match and we had a chance to win 5-4 if we swept the doubles. We just fell short and my doubles teams were a little inexperienced.”

Manteca ended its team season on Tuesday, but will have Lopez advancing to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament on Thursday at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club. Ma and Angel Tejada will also be entered in the tourney as a doubles team after making it to the final of the VOL tournament last week.
