A season to remember got a little bit better for Ripon Christian head coach John De Visser and senior Clayton Prins.
They were honored with the Trans Valley League Coach of the Year and Co-Most Valuable Offensive Player awards, respectively.
DeVisser was the guiding force for a Ripon Christian squad that finished 7-17 a season ago. The Knights played for the league championship against Escalon in the league finale, falling to TVL Pitcher of the Year Brandon Shaw 7-1. The Knights earned a Sac-Joaquin Section Division V Baseball Championship berth with their second place finish, but got an unlucky draw meeting up with Central Catholic in the first round.
Prins walked away with co-Offensive Player of the year honors, sharing the accomplishment with Escalon High sophomore Josh Miguel. Prins led the TVL in stolen bases, finished second in slugging and was third in on base percentage. Prins was also third in runs scored and fourth in RBIs.
Prins led the Knights with a .393 average, with 19 RBIs and shared the team-lead with Aaron Fay with two home runs apiece. Prins’ 21 runs scored ledt him second to Fay who had 24.
Fay leads a list of five other Knights to make the all-TVL team, joining four Ripon Indians to also earn conquer the feat.
Fay, teammates Steve Vander Molen, Arie Den Dulk, Robbie DeVries and Robert Hull were recognized on the all-league team. Ripon’s Justin Scott, Hayden Koch, Zach Evans and Alex Gustin all earned spots on the all-TVL squad as well.
The Indians just missed out on a postseason berth, relying heavily on starting pitcher Scott. Scott won seven games for Ripon, leading the team in strikeouts (67) and also finished the season hitting .300 in his junior year. All of Ripon’s four all-TVL players are juniors, giving head coach Mitch Evans something promising to build upon next season.
Earning honorable mention recognition were Ripon’s Jake McCreath, Sam Van Vuren, Matt Ratto, Ryan Durrer and David Knell. From Ripon Christian, Elijah English and Justin Lemoine earned spots.
Escalon High’s Spencer Franceschetti was the TVL Most Valuable Player, and the Cougars’ Miguel was the Most Valuable Defensive Player.
