The Ripon Indians sent 10 wrestlers to the mat during the Trans Valley League Wrestling Championships, and nine of the 10 earned berths into the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V Tournament with top-four finishes in Saturdays league championships.
The Indians landed one wrestler as a No. 1 seed, but saw five Indians make it to the league finals, with three of them taking titles. The Indians’ lone No. 1 seed was 215-pounder Travis Smith who substantiated his No. 1 seed with an impressive victory.
“The brackets were kind of small, but we ended up with nine advancing and that’s pretty good,” Ripon head coach Glenn White said. “Overall, I think that our kids did well, I was pleased with our effort.”
Ripon High’s Trevor Daniels won the 154-pound bracket, getting a 6-1 decision against Kyle Silva of Hilmar for the championship. Teammate Trevor Smith won the 173-pound championship by pinning Escalon High’s No. 1 seed Mike Simones for the title.
Travis Smith cruised to the 217-pound title, coming off a bye before pinning Adam Padilla (Hughson) and outlasting Travis James 6-2 for the title. Nick Solaro almost pulled off the 114-pound title, falling 6-2 to Daniel Williams of Hughson in the championship.
The Indians will prepare all week for the SJS Division-V tournament, which will be held at Summerville High in Tuolumne City, beginning Friday. The goal will be a top-4 finish in the divisional, earning a coveted berth to the Masters Tournament. No alternates will be selected for each weight class.
“This time of year I am looking for them to be better every week,” White said. “We have been on the mat all year and this is exactly what we train for.
“We’ll work hard this week and go up there and see what happens.”
