Ripon rolls to third straight TVL title

Ripon didn’t play its best, but it was plenty good enough to clinch its third straight Trans-Valley League championship.

The Indians outshot runner-up Hilmar 431-443 in the league finale at Valley Springs’ Greenhorn Creek Resort & Golf Club on Tuesday. They are looking to fry bigger fish next week in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V Tournament hosted at Stevinson Ranch Golf Club — the home course of rival Hilmar. Ripon is coming off two straight runner-up finishes at divisionals.

“We played OK today, but not as well as we have been playing,” Ripon coach Chris Musseman said. “They’re hungry. They wanted league, but they were more focused on next Monday than they were today.”

Ripon was paced by sophomore Nick Sharp’s 8-over 80, the fourth lowest score of the round. Sharp was voted MVP, while Hilmar standout Landon Azevedo, who carded an even 72 Monday, earned Most Outstanding Golfer.

Kyle Head (87), Robby Figeroid (95), Jack Brierly (87), and Nathan Suender (85) were among the 12 to earn spots on the all-TVL team. Cole Herrin contributed to the team score with a 92.

Escalon finished with a 469 and is the third TVL team to qualify for the section’s Division V tourney.
