After Waterford High opened its Southern League contest with Ripon Christian focused on using the gameclock as its friend, the Knights were able to curb its effectiveness in the second, cruising to a 45-29 SL victory over Waterford Tuesday.

The Knights (9-0 SL, 17-5 overall) trailed Waterford after one period of play but figured things out in a hurry, outscoring Waterford 11-2 to head into halftime with a lead they wouldn’t squander.

“They came out and held the ball to less than 10 seconds on the playclock before they put up a shot,” Ripon Christian coach Ron Vander Molen said. “It surprised us, but we were able to get things figured out.

“We held them to eight points in the second and third quarters, and that was the difference.”

Logan Vos led all scoeres with 17 points, while teammates Josh Van Gronigan, Dan Vos and Jordan Goslinga all chipped in the Ripon Christian win with five.

Ripon Christian resorted to man-to-man defense, stifling Waterford’s success to the first period.

The Knights will be back on the hardwood Friday when they play host to Le Grand High. The two programs are scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. tip-off.
