RIVERBANK – The Ripon Indians had a tough time trying to solve Riverbank High pitcher Carlye Avey, stringing up just five hits in Tuesday’s 2-0 Trans Valley League loss.
Ripon (1-3 TVL, 6-3 overall) battle, but could not overcome the fourth inning when Riverbank posted back-to-back doubles to plate the game-winning run. Indians pitcher Kirsten Mortimer gave the Bruins fits, holding them to three hits, one earned run and five strikeouts.
The Bruins added an insurance run in the sixth off errors, leaving Ripon to deal with its third league loss.
“We had opportunities to score in the second and in the sixth inning,” Ripon head coach Robert Vernon said. “We had a runner on and nobody out in both innings, but we weren’t able to move the runner over to make anything happen.
“We also had a couple of base-running mistakes that we couldn’t overcome.”
Mortimer stayed hot at the plate, getting one of Ripon’s five hits.
Ripon’s task at hand won’t get any easier as they travel to Escalon to take on the Cougars Thursday when it continues the TVL schedule.
