Ripon girls dominate TVL cross country opener

Michaela Singh compiled 21 service points, including six aces, helping Manteca’s volleyball team take care of visiting Gregori in three sets Thursday, 25-14, 25-16, 25-22.

The 5-foot-10 outside hitter also had six kills and two blocks for the Buffaloes (5-4). Courtney Washburn added six kills of her own to go with five digs.

Ava Negranza and Jessica Almeida shared setting duties, finishing with 11 and nine assists, respectively. Caryn Van Zant chimed in with four kills and a block.


Sierra 3, Big Valley Christian 0

The Timberwolves (9-0) traveled to Modesto and dispatched the reigning Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI champion and NorCal finalist, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22.

Rebecca Thomson led them with 27 assists, three digs and four kills. Zoe Kossart tallied 12 kills, five digs and three aces. Sophia Marian collected eight kills and four digs. Jenna Dalen paced the defense with 10 digs.


Ripon Christian 3, Waterford 0

Winners of 14 straight sets, the Knights (2-0, 7-2 overall) dominated the Southern Athletic League tilt, 25-4, 25-15, 25-10.

Ripon Christian was effective from the service line, firing 18 aces. Lea Van Wyngarden accounted for six aces and a team-high nine digs.

Jordan Vander Veen finished with 10 kills and five aces. Ava Van Groningen scored eight kills, Avery McMurray contributed eight digs and Megan Weststeyn handed out 30 assists.


Beyer 3, Lathrop 1

Host Lathrop (2-1, 4-3 overall) came up short in this first-place battle in the Western Athletic Conference, 20-25, 25-12, 13-25, 11-25.

ZaRyah Mageo netted eight kills, three solo blocks and two digs. Elizabeth Andrade had six kills, nine digs and five aces. Alejandra Vasquez compiled 21 assists and nine digs. Irais Martinez garnered 26 digs.



Trans-Valley League

Ripon’s varsity and junior varsity girls teams opened league with dominant efforts Wednesday at River Bluff Regional Park in Ceres.

Annie Wild (20 minutes, 23.78 seconds) and Jenna Skavdahl (22:19.56) finished 1 and 2, respectively, while sophomore Starla Skiles took fourth (23:04.09). The Indians’ other two scorers, Asia Rose (seventh, 23:33.72) and Mallory Govia (ninth, 23:50.31) also placed in the top 10 on the 5,000-meter course.

Ripon’s varsity boys were the runner-up to Hughson, which had the top five overall placers. Julio Pelaez (seventh, 18:00.37), Devin Fitzpatrick (ninth, 18:16.67) and Valente Hernandez (10th, 18:16.86) paced the Indians.

In the two-mile JV girls race, Kyle Agbayani-Duenas (15:17.04) took second. Teammates Celeste Nunez, Jana Esenwein, Emilie Benavides, Lauren Martini finished 6-9, in that order.

Jonathan Salinas (fifth, 13:47.81) and Vincent Martini were the Nos. 5-6 finishers in JV boys.

Sierra 2, Big Valley Christian 0

Gurjaap Kaur collected six aces and six assists, while Amaya Maciel mashed six kills in Sierra’s 25-9, 25-17 sweep.

Cianna Leonardo turned in seven assists. Ellie Denny had three assists and four digs.


Manteca 2, Gregori 0

The Buffaloes came away with the 25-18, 25-15 sweep.

Setter Jayana Dias anchored the attack, finishing with 13 assists and two aces. Peyton McDonald notched four kills, five aces and three digs. Sophia Nussbaumer netted a team-high five kills, while Getzabel Ayala spearheaded the back row with five digs.


Lathrop 2, Beyer 1

The Spartans battled back to take a 19-25, 27-25, 15-11 thriller.

Annie Millan fired 11 kills while picking up six digs. Milyn Morales tallied seven kills, five digs and two aces. Valerie Renteria blasted six kills. Julia Roaquin handed out 27 assists, and Justine Mabutas had 13 digs.


Frosh volleyball

Manteca 2, Gregori 0

Kamiyah Johnson rung up seven aces and six digs, helping the Buffs secure a 25-18, 25-21 victory.

Sienna Lowery dished out nine assists. Saniyah Anthony contributed six kills and three digs. Talia Shelbourne had four kills and two blocks.

Lathrop 2, Beyer 0

Alyana Vere amassed 16 service aces, as the Spartans rolled to a 25-22, 25-17 sweep.

Shakara Porter added five kills and two aces. Kriselle Matela chipped in six assists and three aces. Angelic Bermudez picked up six digs.
