ROUNDUP: Ripon XC wins boys, girls titles at Frogtown invite

Ripon’s boys and girls cross country teams captured the 3-mile, varsity small-school division championships in the Bret Harte Frogtown Invitational this past Saturday at Calaveras County Fairgrounds.

Ripon Christian also had participants in the small-school division, while Manteca, Sierra and Lathrop competed with the large schools.

Individually, Annie Wild was the top performer with a first-place finish in 20 minutes, 14.07 seconds. She had the second overall fastest time among female runners.

Jenna Skavdahl (sixth, 21:34.98), Asia Rose (24th, 23:15.28), Alyson Harvey (28th, 23:50.45) and Mallory Govia (31st, 24:06.38) rounded out scoring for the Indians, who outpointed Amador 65-83 for the title. Ripon Christian came in 11th place with 258 points.

Julio Pelaez placed second to spearheaded the Ripon boys’ win. He clocked in at 17:31.75. Devin Fitzpatrick (seventh, 18:21.52), Valente Hernandez (eighth, 18:25.98), Logan Trickey (18th, 19:20.77) and Tristan Anderson (22nd, 19:33.45) also contributed to the team score of 37. Kings Academy was the runner-up with 87 points, and Ripon Christian was 13th with 331.

In the varsity large-school division, Sienna Jones of Manteca was the top female from the area with a 14th-place finish in 21:52.89. Fellow Buffalo Jordyn Hegarty was 37th in 23:45.26. Other notable efforts came from Lathrop’s Taimane Lowery (36th, 23:44.72) and Sierra’s Mikayla Bueno (43rd, 24:02.75) and Marissa Gonzalez (45th, 24:09.24). Sierra (316) and Lathrop (334) finished in 13th and 14th place, respectively. Manteca did not have enough runners to field a team.

Top male runners from the area were Sierra’s Brendan Alson (30th, 18:51.01), Manteca’s Oscar Angel (31st, 18:51.77), Sierra’s Tristan Crowe (32nd, 18:52.23) and Lathrop’s Michael Salcedo (50th, 19:14.65). Lathrop (279) took 10th in the team standings, while Manteca (334) finished 15th.

 

GOLF

Valley Foothill League

Gabbi Ilardi turned in an impressive medalist effort for Ripon in the North Division midseason tournament Monday at Swenson Park Golf Course in Stockton.

The Indians got their first look at Argonaut, which outscored them 330-354.

Ilardi, however, stole the show with a 5-under-par 67. She was the only player in the tournament to finish in the red. Katie Martin (88), Vivian Parsons (94), Aaliyah Martinez (105) and Gaby Calderara (114) also scored for Ripon.

Argonaut’s Lily Stern finished as the overall runner-up with an even par.

 

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Ripon 3, Hughson 1

The Indians (2-1 Trans-Valley League, 11-6 overall) had balanced contributions in the 20-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-14 win.

Makenzie Loechler led the way with seven kills, six blocks and three aces. Avery McKiernan added seven kills and two blocks. Reagan Wilkerson chipped in four aces and five digs. Danika Matuska and Kylee Fullmer added six and five kills, respectively. 

 

GIRLS WATER POLO

Ceres 19, Lathrop 9

In Ceres, Kalani Soriano erupted for four goals, and Sofia Moreno tacked on three more. Elizabeth Rodriguez and Hannah Stewart each contributed one.

 

Lathrop 13, Ceres 2

Christian Buerster bagged five goals to help the Spartans ring up their first Western Athletic Conference win in school history.

Caiden Wiesnieski added three goals, Alan De La Garza Garcia netted two, while Connor Giovannoni, Gustavo Martinez and Krish Markendey had one each.

 

GIRLS TENNIS

Oakdale 5, Sierra 4

Tanya Sharma and all three doubles teams came through for points for visiting Sierra.

Sharma blanked Payton Avila 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match.

In doubles, Simran Dosanjh and Amber Garza prevailed in the No. 1 match, 6-2, 6-4. The No. 2 tandem of Lauren Byrd and Keneley Mejia pulled out a 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory. Prabhnoor Dhillon and Natalie Mejia won the third doubles match, 6-2, 6-4.

The Timberwolves had chances to come away with the overall win, most notably No. 4 Sierra singles player Monogna Veeravalli.She was outlasted by Riely Miller, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

 

JV volleyball

Ripon 2, Hughson 0

Katelyn Bogetti was the steadying influence for Ripon with 13 assists, six aces and four digs. The Indians rolled, 25-13, 25-12.

Shayla McKeon collected eight kills and five aces. Olivia Maragos picked up 10 digs.

 

Frosh volleyball

Ripon 2, Hughson 0

Ripon held on for the 30-28, 25-12 win.

Ashley Campos led the defense with eight digs. Kyra Schneninger contributed seven assists and three kills. Addison Naranjo added five aces and four digs. Olivia Taylor chimed in with five aces, four assists and three kills.
