Sierra junior Ryan Alves made it to the semifinal round of a second straight day, this time in doubles competition on Thursday.
He and teammate Narshith Kumar were eliminated by eventual champions Anish Pattanaik and Sri Kotaproulu of Mountain House in the Valley Oak League Tournament at Sierra High.
All semifinalists earn All-VOL honors, and the finalists qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Individual Tournament.
Mopur swept fellow Mountain House freshman Nishant Rao 6-1, 6-1 in the singles final on Thursday. In the doubles title round, top-seeded Pattanaik and Kotaproulu downed Oakdale’s Jaxton Marler and Camden Knight, seeded second, 6-2, 6-1.
It was a busy two days for Alves, who was unseeded for the singles tourney Wednesday and made an unexpected run to the semis, where he lost to eventual champion Atesh Mopur.
“My brother (former Sierra No. 1 Brady) did it (made all-league) the last three years,” Alves said. “At the start of the season, it kind of felt like I had some big shoes to fill, but I feel like I’m playing my best right now.
He and Kumar, the Timberwolves’ No. 1 player all season, have ample experience as doubles partners. Two years ago, as freshmen, they were the No. 2 tandem for Sierra’s first-time VOL and SJS team championship team.
They were given a tough draw as the No. 4 seed on Thursday. The Sierra duo blanked a team from Patterson 8-0 and fended off No. 5 Matthew Yakligian and Max Birchall of Oakdale in the quarterfinals, 8-4.
Alves and Kumar were no match for Pattanaik and Kotaproulu in the 1-6, 1-6 semifinal defeat.
Although there are no Timberwolves advancing to SJS Individual Tournament, Alves believes the experience he gained this week should serve him well for the section team tennis playoffs beginning May 5.
“I feel like I played some of the best guys that I could,” Alves said. “Obviously, I got to play the Mountain House No. 1 (Mopur) yesterday — he’s amazing. It was good for me to play him, and I feel like I played pretty well, so that just gives me confidence going in.”
Only one other pair from area schools was seeded for the doubles tournament. East Union’s Andrew Delgado and Christopher De Santos received the No. 3 seed but were knocked out in their first match against Oakdale’s third pairing, 3-8.
