Spartans score win on Senior Night

Lathrop High wanted to send its seniors off their home court with a solid showing on Senior Night, and the club answered the call. The Spartans edged out the Manteca Buffaloes in a 3-2 win Wednesday in Valley Oak League action.

Lathrop beat the visiting Buffaloes behind a Monica Brambila 32-assist, four-kill and two-ace night. Teammate Cherubine Consul collected 10-consecutive service points during one rally with three aces. Manraj Kaur finished with 18 digs and Marissa Elliot added four digs and two kills.

“It was a great game,” Lathrop head coach Diana Kimbrough said. “Great play with lots of long rallies, both teams showed their will.”

The Buffaloes were led by Ashley Gase’s 31 assists and Julia Martinez’ game-high 17 kills.

Lathrop will try and close out the VOL campaign with consecutive wins when they travel to Weston Ranch to take on the Cougars. The Buffaloes will wrap up league play with a home match against the East Union Lancers.

 

Sonora 3, East Union 0

The visiting Wildcats were too much for the East Union Lancers, falling in three to Sonora 9-25, 17-25, 18-25 Wednesday in VOL play.

“Sonora is a really good team,” East Union head coach Rich Posz said. “There is a reason why they have only loss to Oakdale.”

Alexis Steele was able to put together a solid outing, racking up four kills in the loss. Teammate Monica King added four digs and six kills for East Union, while Courtney Posz had eight assists and Alex Scopas finished with seven digs for EU.

The Lancers will close out the VOL schedule with a match against Sierra Monday.

 

Oakdale 3, W.Ranch 0

Oakdale had little trouble disposing of the Cougars, knocking them off 25-13, 25-11 and 25-8 Wednesday in league action.

Hayley McIntyre turned in a game-high 11 kills to pace the Mustangs.

The Cougars will close out the VOL schedule with a contest against the Lathrop Spartans Monday at home.

 

Kimball 3, Sierra 1

The Jaguars cruised to a relatively easy win over the host Timberwolves, taking them out 12-25, 25-17, 16-25 and 12-25 Wednesday in VOL action.

Kimball was led by Coutrtney Lewis’ 17 kills and five blocks, while Maddy McLaughlin added seven aces and 34 assists.

Sierra got 30 assists from senior Gabby Olmo along with three kills and 11 digs. Valerie Nestor had a minor impact at the net, collecting two blocks and two kills for Sierra.

Sarah Gullett added a team-high 20 digs in the loss for Sierra.
