Squires battle back to avoid upset

LATHROP — Evan Lewis sparked an 18-1 barrage that started in the second quarter and continued into the third with two 3-pointers, and East Union overcame an early deficit to beat Lathrop 44-40 in sophomore boys basketball action Saturday.

The Squires improved to 6-1 in the Valley Oak League, and 11-3 overall.

Lewis finished with eight points, all of which came during EU’s big run. Alex Del Real turned in 10 points, and Brock Swift nine.

Lathrop was up 26-21 at halftime.

Sierra 49, Central Valley 38
CERES — After dropping a heartbreaker to Weston Ranch in overtime Friday, the Timberwolves took care of business against the Hawks Saturday.

Joseph Berry led a balanced Sierra scoring attack with 11 points and teammate Kayson Matela added nine. Aneal Sahota, Tim Thorton, Bret Wilson and Johnny Waggy all chipped in with six.

“We had good balanced scoring tonight and everyone contributed to the win,” Sierra head coach Justin Muschott said. “It’s nice to close out the first half of league with a win after two tough overtime losses.”

Oakdale 57, Weston Ranch 54
WESTON RANCH — The Cougars dropped a hotly-contested battle despite 27 points and 15 rebounds from Dylan Alexander.

Daviveon Leverett added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

Sophomore girls
East Union 59, Lathrop 36
The Squires (6-2, 11-7) closed out the first half of the VOL season with a solid performance against the Lathrop Spartans Saturday.

Klacey Kachalkin led all scorers with 23 points, while Allison Telles and Kristin Piasecki added 12 and 10, respectively.

Freshman boys
Sierra 58, Central Valley 32
CERES — Sierra remained undefeated in VOL play and on the season with their win over Central Valley. Eric Melgar led the Timberwolves with 12 points on four 3-pointers, and Guillermo Nunez and Justin Patton finished with 10 and nine, respectively.

East Union 51, Lathrop 32
LATHROP — Will Brink rattled in 27 points to lead the Pages (6-2, 11-4).

Justin Nieto contributed 15 points, and Jesus Esquivel had 11.

Sonora 39, Manteca 34
Reshawn Bell finished with 11 points to pace the host Buffaloes (4-4, 7-8). Nick Garcia and Phillip Herrera chipped in eight and seven, respectively.

Junior varsity wrestling
MODESTO — The East Union High wrestling team was well represented at the Enochs Tournament Saturday.

Sarah Phillips produced a gold-medal effort in the 103-pound girls division, and Tevyn Braiden took first in the 135-pound novice division.

Other placers include: Bobby Guillory (second, 103, novice), Peter Barrington (third, 112, novice), Caleb Davis (third, 125, novice), Marcos Aleman (third, 135, JV) and Jeremy Zenneti (fourth, 135, novice).
