SONORA – The East Union High golf team has put together an impressive season, and the squad has no interest in turning around now, putting together an impressive showing at Phoenix Lake Golf Course in Sonora for its latest win.
The Lancers edged out the Sonora Wildcats on their home course 239-265 to improve to 12-0 in Valley Oak League play, leaving little doubt as to who is the team to beat heading into the postseason play.
Frances Telles put together one of her more impressive rounds of the season, earning medalist honors with a round of 43.
“This was our first time playing here,” East Union co-head coach Brian Goulart said. “And Frances showed how to play it. She hit it straight down the middle, hit a lot of greens and chipped an putt well.
“She showed that accuracy is key on a tough course like that.”
Teammates Jackie Ketner, Tori Souza and Jillian Clark all put together solid rounds, finishing nine holes with a score of 46, while Heather Craft rounded out the scoring with a 58.
The team is poised to close the season with the same impressive play that has carried them throughout the season. East Union will look to continue playing solid rounds when the Ceres Bulldogs make their way to Manteca for a 3 p.m. match-up today.
“I think finishing strong is essential,” Goulart said. “Our goal is to get better with each match so we want to continue to do that. I don’t think we set out to be undefeated, we just wanted to be the best team by the end of the year.
“So we need to continue to keep improving.”
Ashley Kiesel held on for medalist honors shooting a 43, while teammate Amanda Orr turned in a nine hole score of 46. Alicia Kmeic shot a 48, Heather Schmitz shot a 53 and Allison Smith finished nine holes in 61 swings to round out the Timberwolves’ team scores.
Sierra will vie for win No. 12 when it travels to French Camp Golf Course to take on the Weston Ranch Spartans.
“We went in there expecting to win,” Weston Ranch head coach Melanie Berezay said. “So it was a little heart-breaking to come up just one stroke short.
“It was just one of those days.”
Emily Medeiros put forth the low round for the Cougars, shooting a 37, while teammate Courtney Duran shot an impressive round of 41. Michelle Lord came in with a 48, while Micniesha Vaughn finished her nine-hole round in 50 swings. Weston Ranch will try and fine tune its swings before a Monday VOL matchup with undefeated East Union High at Manteca Park Golf Course.
