STOCKTON – The season came to an end for Sierra High on Wednesday.
In the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Softball Tournament, the Timberwolves fell 5-0 to Bear River of Grass Valley at the Arnais Stadium and Lodi Softball Complex.
“Those five runs were scored on four errors,” said Sierra coach Nick Olmo. “It was a bad inning.”
Most of the damage occurred in the fifth.
The Bruins of the Pioneer Valley League are vying for their fourth straight section championship. In the last three years, Bear River has compiled an 85-11 mark – and counting – to go with its three titles.
The Bruins will face Center, which edged East Union, in Friday’s semi-final tournament game at the north Stockton softball facility.
Meanwhile, Olmo has enjoyed watching his young team make tremendous strides during the season.
“We started off with only three returning varsity players,” he said. “But we came together, particularly, in the second half.”
Sierra (17-10-1) managed three hits against Bruin pitcher Erin Nichol.
Iyana Hughes, Sommer Wilson, and Allison Smith accounted for those hits.
Olmo was pleased with the effort of senior hurler Gabby Hawkins, who allowed seven hits while registering nine strikeouts and issuing no walks.
He’s optimistic about the future.
“I’m confident we will be back here next year,” Olmo added.
