Timberwolves score seven in first half against Lathrop

Led by Freshman Erick Noriega’s two-0goal effort, the Sierra varsity soccer team improved its Valley Oak League standing with a 10-0 victory over the Lathrop Spartans on Tuesday.

The Timberwolves built a 7-0 margin at the end of the first half – with additional goals coming from Jose Barba, Luis Garcia, Ricky Pacheco, and Joel Boling before heading into the break against the first-year varsity program.

Ryan Gomez, Alex Gonzalez, and Caleb Young all found back the net in the second half to round out the Timberwolves’ scoring day.

“We moved the ball pretty well today and had some good early looks at the goal and took advantage of that,” Sierra coach Jose Montes said. “That gave us a chance to get some of the kids who don’t normally play get out onto the field and get some chances as well.

“We just had a day where everything was working for us.”

Sierra improved its VOL record to 3-1-2 with the victory – with an unfinished game against the Manteca Buffaloes set to be made up Oct. 5. The Timberwolves are leading that game 1-0.

Central Valley 1, East Union 0
Despite a battle that waged well into second half, the East Union Lancers simply couldn’t match the VOL’s top team on Tuesday – falling to Central Valley after a goal in the 70th minute broke the knotted score.

Prior to the game, the Lancers were just three points behind the Ceres Bulldogs and four points behind the leading Hawks in league standings.

“It was a battle all the way down to the wire. We had one really nice play when Alex Hernandez got into a 1-on-1 situation with their keeper but the ball just didn’t go our way,” East Union coach Clarence Goes said. “Even though we lost I can’t say anything bad because we played a good game today.”

The loss drops the Lancers to 4-3 in league play.

Ceres 3, Weston Ranch 1
Despite closing a 2-0 gap with a goal by David Molina in the second half, the Weston Ranch Cougars simply couldn’t match the potent offense of Ceres who put away their third goal with 20 minutes left to leave the game out of reach of the Cougars.

“We played good today, and we moved the ball well, but we just have to put it away when we have the opportunity,” Weston Ranch coach Carlos Gaspar said. “We were down by two goals at the half and then we woke up a little bit but it wasn’t enough.”

The Lancers fall to 2-5 in VOL play with the loss.

Oakdale 3, Manteca 0
Even though they managed to keep the game close, the Manteca Buffaloes couldn’t contain the Oakdale Mustangs who netted three in a game that shot them above the East Union Lancers.

“Overall, we played pretty well today,” Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg said. “We were short numbered – we only had two or three subs – but the guys played a great game against a really solid Oakdale squad.”

FROSH SOPH
Manteca 7, Oakdale 0
With Charlton Shankar’s sure foot at the crisp passing of Niko Gonzalez the Manteca frosh-soph soccer team managed to jump out to a 2-0 lead before blowing the game open en route to a 7-0 victory to remain unbeaten in the Valley Oak League.

Martinez and Giovanni Marin both netted a pair of goals in the second half – with the game’s final strike coming from Marin’s brother Ricardo. Oral Nunis also contributed with an assist.
