It was not the Sierra Timberwolves’ best effort, but it was good enough to push them to a 1-0 mark in Valley Oak League play with a 47-36 home win over the Sonora Wildcats.
Sierra (8-4 overall) made it back-to-back victories over the Wildcats, beating them 51-47 to cap its non-league schedule last week in the Columbia Tournament.
“It was just a fine game all the way around,” Sierra head coach Scott Thomason said. “It was close throughout; both teams have such similar styles. It was a grind-it-out game; hard fought, very physical, a game we struggled in offensively for the first three quarters.
“We were able to come alive in that fourth quarter.”
Sierra used the hot hand of Trevor Nogueira to push past Sonora (0-1, 6-6).
With the game knotted at 34-34 in the final period, Nogueira netted two straight 3-pointers late in the fourth, catapulting Sierra ahead 40-36. Sonora would score only one more basket the rest of the way.
“We were able to get a few good stops after that and finish out on the free-throw line,” Thomason said. “Anytime you play Sonora you know you’re playing against a well-coached team, so I’m proud of our guys for sustain their effort.
“We’re happy about this win, but we don’t have too much time to celebrate with a trip to Ceres (today).”
Nogueira led Sierra with 12 points, while teammates Jerrod Patton and William Ward both added 10. Junior Edy Guzman chipped in with eight.
Ricky Inderbitzin poured in 21 points, including five 3-pointers, and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead East Union. Robert Vaughn gave the team a boost off the bench and provided 18 points, while TeeJay Gordon contributed 16.
Justin Canatsy scored 18 points for the Bulldogs (7-5), who previously defeated EU 62-55 in the Modesto City Classic.
Alex Pinedo led Lathrop with seven points, Eric Davis had six, while Oscar Calix chipped in with five. The Spartans’ task won’t get any easier when they roll out the welcome mats for the defending VOL champion Manteca Buffaloes at 7:15 p.m.
