Playing on Stouffer Field’s Bermuda grass for the first time, Ripon High’s boys soccer team needed little time to adjust in its 5-1 Trans-Valley League win over Hilmar Monday.

Matt Uecker delivered goals in the 21st, 41st and 46th minutes for a hat trick, and the Indians moved into second place (3-2, 7-7 overall) in the standings.

The team had been playing its home games at Ripon Elementary.

“We adjusted a lot better to the pace and the speed of the ball,” Ripon coach Jamie DeBruyn said. “I think for Matt his skill is made for a fast field. He likes to get into open space with his speed, and today he got some nice passes through their back line.

“I’ve been waiting for him to do this. I know he is capable of it, and it’s nice to see him to that.”

Hilmar (1-2-2, 2-7-3) gave Ripon the early lead with an own goal. Uecker made it 2-0 with his first goal, which was assisted by Arik Anaya.

Osiris Guerrero booted the Yellowjackets’ only goal in the 34th minute with a penalty kick. That was before Uecker helped Ripon breakaway with the early second-half goals.

Jack Brierly and Aaron Aguilar also had assists, and Rafael Valdez assisted Brock Herrin’s goal in the 76th minute.

Goalie Johnathan Soto finished with seven saves.

Ripon looks to avenge its TVL-opening loss to Escalon back at home next Monday, Oct. 8.



Southern League

Ripon Christian 1, Mariposa 1

In a back-and-forth battle, both teams could only produce one goal apiece despite numerous chances.

Christian Manes converted a penalty kick in the 32nd minute, but the Ripon Christian (3-2-2, 7-3-3) lead only lasted four minutes.

Brayden Van Vuren came up with 11 saves at goal.
