Even when playing out of system, Lathrop is able to make something out of nothing.

That’s just how things are going for the streaking Spartans, who downed visiting Beyer 25-12, 25-17, 25-12 on Monday for their 14th straight win — the last 13th coming via sweep. It’s also the 39th consecutive win in Western Athletic Conference play for the two-time defending champions.

While Lathrop (7-0 WAC, 15-3 overall) was able to get its attack going for much of the match, it also stacked enough positive plays out of system to keep the Patriots (5-2, 9-8) at bay.

Early in the third set, standout outside hitter Siliana Fa’ataualofa kept a long rally alive by hustling to an open spot to make a great save on a tipped ball. Lathrop eventually earned the point on a hitting error from Beyer, giving the Spartans a 10-3 lead during a six-point service run in which libero Jadore Dixon landed three of her four aces.

“I think our team does a really good job about not letting the mistakes that we make get to us,” Fa’ataualofa said. “I think we have a really good next-point mentality, which helps us better our game, which helps us earn points, which helps all of us look amazing from the pass, to the set to the hit. I couldn’t do it all myself. It’s such a team sport.”

The third-year senior led Lathrop with 11 kills on 16 attacks. Erin Chunn came alive in the second and third sets to finish with eight kills, but she also served 12 points and five aces. Middle blocker Breanna Wiseman added three kills, two solo stuffs and three aces.

Dixon totaled 12 digs, and sophomore setter Sariah Hilton had 24 assists.

“Honestly, I feel like we play in harmony,” Hilton said. “If the pass isn’t there, we have another thing. If I can’t get to the set, someone else will be there and the hitters will do their thing.”

Opposite hitter Malia Fa’ataualofa (kill, two blocks, five digs, ace) and middle blocker Irshbir Bisla (two kills, block) also had their moments. Lathrop was so dominant in the third set that the reserves got their chance midway through. Sophomore Juliet Tara served five consecutive points, including an ace, while Audrina Fisher and Araya Carson each got to contribute a late kill.

“All the credit to the girls,” Lathrop coach Toa Fa’ali’i said. “It just shows what they do at practice. The energy is there, the focus is there and they push each other. That’s where it happens. It looks easy right now, but it’s because of how they work in practice.”

The Spartans begin the second half of their conference schedule Thursday at Pacheco, one of three teams tied for second place with two losses apiece.

The Spartans swept 25-14, 25-13 behind Cassidy Fa’ali’i’s 13 assists, five digs and two aces.

Zakia Booker bashed six kills to go with three digs. Ne’Myah Bellion contributed four kills and four aces.

Lathrop held on for the 25-21, 19-25, 15-11 victory.

Jessica Reff racked up six service aces and four assists. Liona Lauaki, Teonna Finney and Kyla Swan had two kills apiece.
