WR tops Lathrop, collapse with Ceres

LATHROP – The Weston Ranch Cougars did not kick off their match with the Ceres Bulldogs in the manner in which they would have liked and it cost them dearly in a 35-30 Valley Oak League loss Wednesday.

Weston Ranch forfeited an opportunity to try and earn a berth into the Sac-Joaquin Section Team Duals Tournament to open postseason play, forcing Weston Ranch to turn to the individual circuit to continue its season.

“They really outwrestled us,” Cougar head coach Pat King said. “In my seven years at Weston Ranch, that was the flattest I have ever seen our team start a day.

“We opened up with Ceres at 4 p.m. and our kids just weren’t ready to wrestle.”

The Cougars (4-2) got solid performances from Michael Sailsbery (119-lb), Chris Contreas (189-lb), Matt Olmos (215-lb) and Fonga Tia (HWT) all of whom tallied pins. Weston Ranch was able to close out its action with a win, disposing of Lathrop 72-6.

Robert Gonzales (140-lb) scored an overtime win by pin in his action against the Spartans, while Broderick Olitan (145-lb), Travis Bowen (152-lb) and Tia all closed out the match with pins.

“Lathrop has some kids that battle,” King said of the Spartans. “Their biggest problem was they got matched up with some of my better kids.

“Lathrop is going to be good over the next few seasons. They’re doing a good job over there.”
