Modesto falls short against Visalia

MODESTO (AP) — Drew Ellis hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, leading the Visalia Rawhide to a 6-4 win over the Modesto Nuts on Wednesday.

Breckin Williams got Joe Rizzo to fly out with runners on first and second to end the game for his first save of the season.

The home run by Ellis scored Renae Martinez to give the Rawhide a 4-2 lead.

The Rawhide later tacked on a run in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Anfernee Grier hit a solo home run, while Ramon Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Daulton Varsho in the eighth.

Modesto saw its comeback attempt come up short after Anthony Jimenez hit an RBI double and Manny Pazos hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to cut the Visalia lead to 6-4.

Visalia right-hander Connor Grey (10-8) picked up the win after allowing two runs on five hits over five innings. Opposing starter Reggie McClain (4-11) took the loss in the California League game after allowing four runs and six hits over six innings.

Evan White homered and singled, scoring a pair of runs while also driving home a couple for the Nuts. Jimenez doubled and singled, also stealing two bases.
