1990: Manteca High dominates All VOL tennis

20 years ago: May 9, 1990 - Befitting a team that plowed through the opposition with a perfect record, Manteca High dominated the list of all-VOL tennis honorees announced Monday night by the league’s coaches. The Buffaloes swept the big three awards, Sharyl Burgeson being named Coach of the Year, while Paul Banks was tabbed the Most Valuable Singles Player and the duo of John Blankenship and Julius Kamarga was selected as the Most Valuable Doubles Team. Banks got the nod on the basis of his 25-2 record.
The East Union High softball team defeated Manteca High 5-3 on Thursday.

East Union High took a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Manteca High in baseball action on Friday. After doubling in a run to tie the score, Mark Kackley scored from second on a fielder’s choice with the winning run.

10 years ago: May 13, 2000 - East Union High overcame a three-run deficit on Friday and ended their baseball season with a 9-6 victory at Oakdale High. Chris Adams and Brian Glancy had back-to-back doubles in a big fourth-inning rally for the Lancers.

Despite being held to three hits, Sierra High’s second-inning run held up to defeat Manteca High 1-0 on the Buffaloes’ diamond on Friday. The run came across when Ryan Teicheira’s two-out single plated Matt Berezay. The Timberwolves will enter the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs, while the Buffs of Coach Mark Kackley end their campaign at 6-8 in league, 13-14 overall.

East Union High sophomore Ryan Harris hit a pitch over the right field fence for a ninth-inning, two-run homer Thursday, sealing the first-ever undefeated varsity softball season in the Lady Lancers’ 30-year history. It gave EU a 2-0 win over Manteca High. Losing pitcher Becci Harnden was outstanding on the mound with 14 strikeouts. Winning pitcher Jennifer Lewallen, coming off a perfect game on Tuesday, had 13 strikeouts.

East Union High’s Amy Haapanen was the only local female athlete with two wins at Thursday’s Valley Oak League track championships at Modesto Junior College. She doubled with victories in the shot put (37-5) and the discus (106-2). In the boys’ division, Sierra High’s James Sadler took a pair of firsts--in the high jump (6-4) and in the triple jump (44-8).

Sierra High’s Amanda Tucker drove out a dramatic eighth-inning home run to beat West High 5-3 in softball action on Thursday. The blast drove in Kim Huntley and Vanessa Portillo.

Bill Stricker was selected to fill retiring Dino Cunial’s shoes as Athletic Director at East Union High. Cunial said “integrity” and “patience” best describe Stricker and he expects nothing less from Stricker, based on his long-time association with the lanky 6-foot, 8-inch coach.

Coach Gene Mullen’s East Union High golfers qualified for the final team spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section finals with their fourth-plce performance in Monday’s sub-section tournament at the Manteca Park Course. The Lancers held off Lincoln High 402-403.
