Ripon, Ripon Christian vying to survive second round

Tournament play began with 18 teams looking for a spot on the U.C. Davis courts come Nov. 19, but that number has been chopped to eight teams and the volleyball programs of Ripon and Ripon Christian High’s are looking to join each division’s final four.

Both programs will open second round action today, with Ripon Christian making the short trip to Modesto to take on Big Valley Christian, while the Indians will roll out the welcome mats for Orestimba High.

Ripon found little challenge in their 3-0 opening round win over Marysville and the Knights surprised some bracket followers with their first-round upset over No. 7 seed Valley Christian. If the Knights can continue their magic at Big Valley Christian the squad will be one victory away from a berth into the division V semi-finals.

Ripon will have a more difficult challenge in its second round contest, taking on the tournament’s No. 6 seed that hasn’t lost a match since Sept. 28 when No. 9 seed Central Catholic stopped them 3-1 in Western Athletic League action.

If the Indians can hold off Orestimba, the squad will hope for a Summerville High upset over Vacaville Christian, leaving Ripon with its third straight home match against the No. 7 seed and in prime playoff position.

Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. first whistles.
