A man is dead.
And now is up to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges are warranted for the altercation over the weekend that ended in his death.
According to the Manteca Police Department, a local hospital emergency room contacted authorities shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Saturday to inform them a deceased adult male may have been in an altercation earlier in the evening.
Responding detectives determined that the man was involved in an altercation on the 200 block of North Main Street – near the intersection of Main and Center streets. They were able locate the area where the altercation took place and processed it as a crime scene throughout the night.
They located surveillance footage of the incident and were able to identify the other party involved. Detectives and made contact with that person early Sunday morning and took a statement about what happened.
And after forwarding all of the information on to the district attorney’s office, it’ll now be up to prosecutors to determine whether the facts of the case warrants charges for the man’s death.
“After speaking with the other party, obtaining statements from witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage, the possibility that the conduct did not rise to the level of justifying prosecution was considered,” the Manteca Police said in a statement updating the incident. As a result, no arrests have been made at this time and the case is being forwarded to the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office for review.
“The DA’s office will make the final determination if charges in this incident are warranted.”
The identity of the deceased male, and the circumstances surrounding the incident and what transpired at the scene, are not currently being released by authorities.
