Teenagers in Lathrop will undoubtedly have something to celebrate when they wrap up the 2018/19 school year in May.
And the Lathrop Youth Advisory Commission wants to see if there is an appetite for giving those same teens a venue for them to celebrate.
Today, the Youth Advisory Commission will consider the possibility of hosting an end-of-the-year teen party for Lathrop students at the conclusion of the school year. The meeting will take place inside of the career center at Lathrop High School – located at 647 Spartan Way – at 12:40 p.m.
The group will also consider the possible creation of a teen scholarship fund for local students who may be going off to college – providing educational opportunities from the fundraising that the organization does through the year by hosting a number of local events that teens and young adults get to enjoy in their community.
Appointed by the Lathrop City Council, the Youth Advisory Commission was instrumental in the creation of what became the Lathrop Generations Center – which serves as both the Lathrop Public Library and a teen center for kids to enjoy – and helped push for the creation of a place that local students could enjoy without having to leave the community in which they live.
Former Lathrop City Councilman Omar Ornelas – who was appointed to a position on the council after coming in third in his first ever election – was previously a member of the YAC before ascending the local political hierarchy, bringing with him the group’s goal of creating a teen center.
When funding became available for the construction, it was the YAC that helped organize the meetings where young people expressed their input as to what they would like to see at both the teen center and the outdoor skatepark adjacent to it – a park that quickly became a favorite for serious skateboard enthusiasts throughout the South County.
