Ripon Rotary unleashing 1,000 duck fundraiser

The Ripon Rotary Club will again unleash 1,000 toy ducks as part of the trade school scholarship fundraiser.

Rubber ducks galore are expected to fill one of the canals in Ripon.

It’s all par to the Ripon Rotary Club and its annual 1,000 Duck Race scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, May 9.

As for the whereabouts? That remains a secret, according to Rotarian John Mangelos.

What’s known is proceeds from the Duck Race will once again go towards trade school scholarships for graduating seniors at Ripon High and/ or Ripon Christian High.

Students from the Class of 2022 will be eligible to receive a $1,000 Rotary scholarship to pursue vocational schooling. In the past, they’ve used the funding to go towards heating & air conditioning, plumbing, or electrical school.

Last year, Rotary had its fair of qualified applicants. Rather than four, the local chapter of the international service organization opted to pony up for two more scholarships, making it six scholar winners altogether, Mangelos said.

The toy rubber ducks, during the day of the event, will be numbered, both top and bottom, from one to 1,000 in the event of a photo finish.

Rotary received the OK from South San Joaquin Irrigation District for use of the waterway. The Ripon Consolidated Fire District will also help in the dropping of the rubber ducks into the canals.

The race is expected to cover about half a mile with the local firefighters doing videotaping via drone.

Prizes for those participating include Bank of Stockton gift basket, Ripon Jewelers gift basket, foursome to play a round of golf at Spring Creek Country Club, Blue Diamond gift basket courtesy of Faye and Harrison Gibbs, and pizza per month for one year from Mountain Mike's.

The Duck Race is scheduled to once again be livestreamed.

Cost of $5 per ducks – or as Mangelos puts it: “Four ducks for 20 bucks” – and can be purchased at Spring Creek CC or Barnwood Arms gun shop at 120 E. Main St., Ripon.
