Christmas came early for those at Saturday’s Christmas Giveaway at the Paulsen Ranch.

Pete Paulsen – he’s also the owner of Paulsen Motor Sports Custom Wheels and Tires – was greeted that morning with an estimated 800 or so at his workshop barn during the second annual Bike for Kids giveaway.

“It reminded me of Bay to Breakers,” Paulsen said, comparing the large gathering of people that extended from his front gate to Bowman Road, to the popular running event in San Francisco.

He and his workers were able to accommodate 102 children from needy families.

The bikes, from all sizes along with makes and models, were donated, needing various degrees parts and labor along with TLC. Paulsen and his crew – included were handful of volunteers – providing just that.

“By 1 p.m., we had a bunch of happy kids,” he said afterward. “Sadly, we wouldn’t have enough for everybody.”

More are on the way – Paulsen is looking for the small used bikes.

He’s also been short on the cash needed for parts and supplies for these fix-me-uppers.

He started Bikes for Kids by donating 30 or bikes to Haven of Peace Women’ Shelter about a year ago. But this year’s event far exceeded his expectations.

“It was crazy to see the turnout we had this year,” Paulsen said.

The event at his ranch also included a visit from Santa Claus along with cookies, hot chocolate and, for the adults, coffee.
