Ground has just broken on Manteca’s fifth 7-Eleven and already a sixth one is being proposed.
The Manteca Planning Commission on Thursday when they meet at 6 p.m. are reviewing plans for a 3,440-square-foot 7-Eleven convenience store with gas pumps along with 59,965 square feet of retail space in three different buildings for the northwest corner of Union Road at Lathrop Road.
The 6.8 acres currently has a house and a metal warehouse that will be demolished. It is immediately east of where a 136-unit thee-story apartment complex had previously been proposed.
It is not clear from the staff report whether left turns into and left turns out of the proposed Woodbridge West retail center at driveways close to the Lathrop Road and Union Road intersection will be blocked by a median.
In the past restricting such access near busy intersections has been a concern of the Manteca Planning Commission due to the potential for traffic accidents.
The commission imposed such a requirement on the fifth 7-Eleven now under construction on the northeast corner of Louise Avenue and Main Street when staff did not recommend such a requirement even though seven years earlier they had required it at the same intersection when the CVS Pharmacy was built on the southwest corner.
The retail center is planned for three phases with the 7-Eleven and gas station being built first.
Manteca already has four 7-Elevens — three on Yosemite Avenue and one on Main Street at Northgate Drive. A Southland Corporation spokesperson indicated last year even though the existing Main Street location is about a half mile from the fifth store at Louise and Main it will remain open.
If approved it will mean Manteca has four more gas stations on the way. Besides the two 7-Eleven locations, site work has started on a Chevron station at Union Road and Atherton Drive. The city has also approved a Rotten Robbie’s at Airport Way and Wawona Street.

Planners will also review plans for a 52-lot subdivision dubbed “Farmhouse” that’s proposed for the southwest corner of Woodward Avenue and Union Road.
The 9.92 acre site currently has an almond orchard and a 1918 farmhouse and barn as well as a somewhat newer house. Those three structures will remain.
An existing street named Maehl Drive in a neighboring subdivision to the west will be extended into the Farmhouse subdivision. There will also be an access street to Union Road.
The commission meets at 7 p.m. at the council chambers in the Civic Center, 1001 W. Center St.
