Students enthused about additions to 59 year-old campus

Students quickly utilized the new two-story classroom building at East Union High during the first day of school.

The Lancers led once again.

On Tuesday – the first day of school for Manteca Unified – they did so by arriving to a practically new East Union High campus.

The centerpiece at EU was the new two-story classroom building featuring 31 classrooms, a media center, and a student commons area, coupled with outdoor learning spaces.

The recent campus renovations also consisted of the new small gym equipped with a new weight room and indoor PE facility to accommodate wrestling and aerobics was made possible by Measure A bonds.

East Union High is part of a larger $65 million modernization effort that also includes Manteca High. Work was conducted by CT Brayton & Sons.

Students, meanwhile, received the red-carpet treatment on this first day. Activities Director Janaia Cano and the Lancers cheer squad enthusiastically greeted those along carpeted walkway – next to the sparkling two-story building – like a premiere event.

According to proudtobemusd, excited students explored their new digs while being “reunited with their friends in the quad and (becoming) the first to take their seats in the freshly opened classrooms.”’

Principal Eric Simoni was proud of the changes, calling the new two-story addition a place where “everyone will utilize.”

The first day of school, in addition, marked the 20th year for teacher and coach Willie Herrera, who was recognized for the landmark achievement.

East Union opened in 1966 as Manteca’s second high school.
