Manteca’s girls volleyball bounced back from a frustrating loss on Wednesday, sweeping Central Catholic on the road, 25-18, 29-27, 25-21.

The Buffaloes (1-1, 4-3 overall) were coming off of a five-game loss to rival Sierra in their Valley Oak League opener.

They rode a stellar all-around effort from Taimane Tu’uga in Modesto, as she compiled 17 kills, 15 digs and five aces. Ariceli Castillo added nine kills and seven digs. Middle Trinity Todd had six kills and five total blocks.

Katie Anderson registered 16 assists, eight digs and two aces. She split setting duties with Jillienne Decosta Aldape, who handed out 14 assists.

Defensive specialist Maddie Nunes collected 12 digs, and Lana Bondoc had eight digs and two aces.

Manteca will tangle with a tough non-league test tonight in visiting Sonora.

East Union 3, Kimball 2

The Lancers (4-4) played in their second five-set match in three days, this time winning a non-league match against visiting Kimball (3-6), 25-17, 23-25, 20-25, 33-31, 16-14.

Jedah Haywood highlighted East Union’s attack with 10 kills. Lulu Dayeh accumulated 14 assists and five kills, while fellow setter Lilyan Frye racked up 12 assists, four kills and four aces.

Lola Alvarez pitched in with 13 digs and five aces.

East Union next hosts reigning VOL co-champion Oakdale on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

FLAG FOOTBALL

Sierra 14, Kimball 12

Tessa Zalunardo connected with Elin Villanueva (five receptions, 79 yards) for a 66-yard touchdown pass, and scored on runs for another touchdown and an extra point.

The third-year junior completed 17 of 23 passes for 158 yards, while rushing eight times for 75 yards. Mia Aguirre added 35 yards rushing.

Presley Rogerson led the Timberwolves (4-4) defensively with nine flag pulls. Genessa Chaparro pulled seven, including one for a sack. Autumn Henry contributed an interception.

Sierra’s busy non-league schedule continues today at home against Vanden.

GIRLS GOLF

VOL Tournament 1

East Union senior Arianna Pale led Manteca Unified golfers with a 17-over 89 for third place at Oakdale Golf & Country Club.

Isabella Cortes of team winner Oakdale was low medalist with a 79. Oakdale topped the standings with a team score of 446. East Union was runner-up with a 588 and followed by Mountain House (628), Manteca (641), Patterson (650) and Sierra (693).

Lancers joining Pale were Alizae Farias (118), Kaylee Brown (121), Vivi Bonetti (129) and Eva Diaz (131).

Layla Flannigan paced Manteca with a 10th-place score of 106. Other scorers for the Buffaloes: Ganiyan Giron (128), Dannica Branco (134), Giselle Patterson (134) and Neriah Flores (139).

Eleventh-place Noah Ingua topped Sierra with a 108. She was followed by Ella Williamson (138), Nikitha Muruganagarajan (143), Pragya Tyagi (150) and Abbey Villalovos (154).

The next league tournament is on Sept. 22 at Tracy Golf & Country Club.

JV girls volleyball

Chloe Owens accumulated six assists, three kills, five service points and two aces to help the Lancers sweep, 25-11, 25-17.

Julia Souza contributed three kills, while Addie Souza had six assists and two kills.

Frosh girls volleyball

East Union 2, Kimball 1

The Lancers improved to 5-0 after outlasting Kimball, 25-13, 22-25, 15-11.

Payton Bowers led the way with 18 service points, seven aces, six assists and two kills.

Jordan Ballou served six points and an ace to go with four kills. Amelia Behler pitched in with two kills, four points and an ace. Paisley Geer tallied six points and two kills.
