Editor, Manteca Bulletin,
The East Union High School KIWINS service club just completed a service project to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank, and we have many people to thank. The second annual Dodge Ball Tournament open to students and staff was our project. This year ten teams entered, and we raised $838 for the Second Harvest food Bank from entry fees, and donations at the door. Eighty students at East Union paid ten dollars each to be a member of a co-ed team of eight players. Twenty five KIWINS helped to run the tournament from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 20. Counting the players and the KIWINS seven percent of the student body at East Union High School got involved in this project.
We wish to thank Ben Cantu and Peter Johnson from the Manteca Kiwanis Club, our sponsors, for helping to referee the 22 matches in the tournament. Eryn Bowers and Willie Herrera, Jr. from the East Union faculty refereed and encouraged the students. With the help and cooperation of head custodian Gordon Austin the facilities at the Dalben Center were ideal for the players and spectators.
Carole and Scott Reed of Regal Signs donated a set of eight engraved medals for the first place team, and ribbons for the second and third place teams. We also thank the Manteca Bulletin for printing our press release prior to the tournament, and for the excellent photo coverage of tournament action by photographer Hime Romero in the Monday, March 22, edition of the Bulletin
The 10 teams entered in the tournament were divided into two pools of five teams. Each pool played a round robin of ten rounds. The team with the best record in each pool played for the championship of the tournament. This year the championship team was Miscellaneous Ensemble captained by Brandon McGuiness. The second place team, Team Extreme, was captained by Stephen Gigli. Third place was won by The Spicks and Hick captained by KIWIN Rene Avalos. Rene served as co-chairman with Will Cheung for this successful KIWIN project.
