The Manteca High golf team came through with a solid round, yet the squad still fell 11 strokes shy of upsetting the Valley Oak League’s second-place team in a 252-263 loss.

Sierra (13-1 VOL) closed out the nine-hole round with three players in the 40s. Heather Schmidt led the Timberwolves with a team-low 44, while Ashley Kiesel and Alicia Kmiec both recorded 47s.

Amanda Orr (54) and Allison Smith (60) rounded out the Sierra scorecard.

Manteca was led by Kaylee Joaquin’s round of 42, good for medalist honors. Teammate Danielle Roberts came in behind her with a 48 and Nickey Dias closed out her round in 54 swings. Chandler Rose chipped in a 56 for the Buffaloes.

Joaquin has made the most of her 2009 season, consistently providing the Buffaloes with above-average play from their No. 1 and holding her own in a league full of quality golfers.

“Kaylee was outstanding today and is consistently playing at the level she’s capable of,” Manteca head coach Greg Conway said. “I’m very proud of her, especially after her performance in Wednesday’s Sierra Tournament when she shot an 87.

“She’s proving she’s capable of being the best golfer in our league.”

Manteca put together one of its better match’s of the season, but missed an opportunity to knock off the league’s No. 2 team in the standings.

“Some of our girls had off-course distractions that seemed to affect their game,” Conway said. “Had they shot closer to their average, we would have had a chance to win.

“That’s golf however, anything that disrupts your focus can cause you to have a bad round.”
