INDIANS 7, TIGERS 6

CLEVELAND (AP) — Lonnie Chisenhall singled in the winning run with one out in the ninth inning to help Cleveland deal the Tigers a crucial loss Sunday.

The Tigers had manager Jim Leyland ejected and catcher Alex Avila hurt in a collision with Prince Fielder as they dropped two games behind in the AL Central. They go to Chicago to face the first-place White Sox on Monday.

Jason Kipnis doubled off Jose Valverde (3-3) and scored the tying run on a one-out triple by Carlos Santana.

Valverde then intentionally walked both Michael Brantley and Ezequiel Carrera to face Chisenhall, who lined the first pitch to right-center.

Esmil Rogers (2-1) pitched one inning for the win.

Miguel Cabrera, with visiting Detroit fans chanting “MVP! MVP!” hit a three-run homer in the seventh to put the Tigers ahead 6-5. Cabrera connected off Joe Smith (7-5) for a 402-foot drive.

RANGERS 2, MARINERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Matt Harrison pitched into the ninth inning for his 17th victory and Texas added to its AL West lead for the first time in 10 days.

Adrian Beltre hit his 33rd homer for the Rangers, and Michael Young had his second three-hit game in four days.

Harrison (17-9) got within one out of his fourth complete game of the season, but came out after Jesus Montero’s two-out single put runners at first and third. Koji Uehara struck out Michael Saunders for his first save for the Rangers.

Pitching on his 27th birthday, Harrison allowed a single to start the game. But he didn’t allow a runner past first base until Justin Smoak led off the eighth with his 16th homer. The All-Star left-hander, the fourth AL pitcher to reach 17 wins, benefited from three double plays — two that he started.

The Rangers (87-59) have the best record in the American League, and now have a three-game division lead over Oakland. The Athletics lost for only the second time in 10 games Sunday, 9-5 at home against Baltimore.

YANKEES 6, RAYS 4

NEW YORK (AP) — Russell Martin’s three-run homer highlighted an eventful early burst and the Yankees kept their AL East lead.

The Yankees won the last two in the three-game series. They began the day with a one-game division lead over Baltimore, which later played at Oakland.

Minus ejected manager Joe Maddon, the Rays fell five games behind the Yankees and trail the Orioles and Los Angeles Angels in the wild-card scramble. Cleanup man Matt Joyce also was tossed as Tampa Bay finished 1-5 on its visit to Yankee Stadium and Camden Yards.

Ben Zobrist homered and doubled for Tampa Bay.

Hiroki Kuroda (14-10) struck out 10 in six innings and beat Tampa Bay for the second time this month. Rafael Soriano, the Yankees’ fifth pitcher, earned his 40th save in 43 chances.

Matt Moore (10-11) lost his fourth straight start. The rookie and Kuroda started out well in the last scheduled game between the teams, with the first nine outs overall on strikeouts. Each team finished with only five hits.

WHITE SOX 9, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jake Peavy baffled Minnesota again, Dayan Viciedo and Adam Dunn homered, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Twins 9-2 on Sunday.

The White Sox scored six runs in the sixth inning to support Peavy (11-11) and stay ahead of Detroit in the AL Central.

The Tigers were playing Cleveland on Sunday and travel to Chicago for a makeup game on Monday. It will be the final time the two teams meet this season.

Joe Mauer homered in his return after missing five games with back spasms, but the Twins weren’t able to avoid the sweep and lost to Chicago for the 13th time in 16 games.

After Alexi Casilla’s double in the fifth made it 3-2, Dunn and Viciedo went deep off Scott Diamond (11-8) in the sixth to squash the Twins’ comeback attempt.

After closer Ernesto Frieri gave up two home runs in the ninth Saturday to blow a save and take the loss, Jespen was summoned in the ninth and picked up his second save in four chances. Jespen has held opponents to one earned run in 11 2-3 innings in his last 12 outings.
