Three of the four people that were killed in a chain-reaction accident spurred by a wrong-way drunk driver last week on Highway 99 in Manteca were students at the University of California, Davis.
The university – one of California’s most esteemed – made the announcement on Monday that three of the four people killed in the grisly wreck, which occurred after an intoxicated driver rear-ended a flatbed trailer being towed behind a U-Haul truck and then turned around and went the wrong way on the freeway, were students at the school.
The accident also resulted in the death of the driver that caused the accident.
According to UC Davis, the students that were killed were Minkyu Geon of Hong Kong, a junior majoring in electrical engineering, Margarette Guinto Venture of Virginia Beach, a sophomore majoring in biological sciences, and Cody Orland Mateo of Pasco, Washington, a senior majoring in neurobiology, physiology, and behavior.
The three students were riding in a Subaru that was struck head-on by the wrong-way driver – who CHP officers believe was under the influence of alcohol and or drugs, and was initially identified as a 32-year-old Diannamonick Moeung of Stockton – which forced the Subaru into another vehicle, and eventually turned it around the wrong direction in the opposite lanes of traffic.
A 40-year-old Stockton man, Nicholas Craggs, then struck the Subaru head-on a second time in the freeway’s No. 1 lane. He suffered major injuries in the crash and was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Craggs still had not been booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of DUI or any other charges related to the crash. He was taken to nearby San Joaquin General Hospital with injuries that were described as “major” at the time.
No other information about the accident has been released by authorities. Highway 99 was closed in both directions for multiple hours while the CHP investigated the accident and cleared the scene.
