Ripon Police offer tips on reducing changes of being holiday crime stat

The Ripon Police Department is once again encouraging residents to use preventative measures during the holidays.

“Criminals are always looking for the ‘crime of opportunity,’” police said via social media.

A few ways that folks can make the difference between being a victim and having a great holiday include the following:

·         Keeping home safe when away on vacation – Keep exterior well-lit; lock all doors and windows on short trips; don’t let mail or packages accumulate; create an illusion of being home (lights on a timer, for example); know your neighbors; make sure alarm systems and cameras are functioning properly; don’t post vacation photos on social media (save that for the return trip home).

·         Preventing vehicle break-ins – Keep your car secure; remove visible bags and items from plain view; park in well-lit areas; install an alarm system.

·         Detering porch pirates – Track your packages; require a signature upon delivery; have a lock box for packages outside; talk to neighbors; install security cameras.

To report any suspicious activity, call 209.599.2102 (non-emergency).
