• STATE  MULLS DRIVER’S LICENSES FOR YOUNG MIGRANTS: SACRAMENTO  (AP) — The California Department of Motor Vehicles is uncertain whether to issue driver’s licenses to young immigrants who obtain temporary residency under President Obama’s reprieve program.

The Los Angeles Times reports Saturday (lat.ms/SzIoo9) that department officials say they’re reviewing the matter. A spokesman for Gov. Jerry Brown also says the governor has not issued an opinion.

The issue of driver’s licenses rose last week when Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said her state will not issue licenses to immigrants who arrived in the country illegally as children. Under the new program, qualified applicants will obtain two-year residency.

Although some California media outlets were told the state would issue licenses, DMV deputy director Mike Marando says it is uncertain if the documents the federal government will issue will qualify the immigrants for licenses.



• HUNDREDS PRAY FOR BOYS LOST IN MERCED RIVER: ANAHEIM AP) — Hundreds of people gathered at an Anaheim church to pray for the family of a 10-year-old boy who drowned after being swept away by the Merced River and whose 6-year-old brother remains missing.

About 400 churchgoers attended a service Saturday at Calvary Chapel remembering Andres Adams and his brother, Jacob, who was missing but presumed dead, the Orange County Register reported.

The two boys were swept away late Wednesday in a rough stretch of the Merced River during a side trip to Yosemite Valley.

The boys and their mother were on a church retreat when a hike to see Vernal Fall turned to tragedy. The mother suffered injuries trying to save them.

The mother, an adult son and the two boys had stepped into the water below the Vernal Fall Footbridge to cool off on a day when temperatures were in the 90s. Somehow the boys ended up in white water about 15 feet from the banks and were carried away.

Andres Adams died soon after he was pulled from the water, about 150 yards from where he was caught in the currents.

Four people have drowned in Yosemite National Park this year.



• MAN RESCUED AFTER BEING TRAPPED IN WELL: PALMDALE  (AP) — A man who fell into a well in Palmdale and was trapped there for more than 24 hours has been rescued and is recovering.

Authorities say the man was pulled out of the well about 9 p.m. Saturday after rescue crews broke up concrete around the well’s narrow mouth.

The man, who was able to walk on his own after the rescue, was taken to a hospital for evaluation. None of his injuries were life-threatening.

The man fell into the opening about 6 feet below ground after dropping something in the well and tried to get it out. Horseback riders heard his cries for help and notified authorities.



• VOLUNTEERS SEARCH AMERICAN RIVER FOR MISSING TEEN: SACRAMENTO  (AP) — Hundreds of volunteers on Sunday were taking part in a search along the American River in Sacramento for a missing University of California, Davis student.

The search for Linnea Lomax comes as Marc Klaas, who founded the KlaasKids Foundation after his 12-year-old daughter was kidnapped from her Petaluma home and murdered in 1993, said he was getting involved in the efforts to find her.

The 19-year-old Lomax, a student at the University of California, Davis, has been missing since she walked away from an outpatient mental health facility in Sacramento on June 26.

Her family said she was getting treatment at the facility. Officials say she has not been seen since she left the facility.
