On a night when longtime assistants Dan Eavenson and Rick James were recognized for their 25th season on the coaching staff, Manteca honored them with a dominant effort on both sides of scrimmage Friday in a 63-0 thrashing of visiting Mountain House.
Eavenson’s offensive line paved the way for 238 rushing yards on just 14 carries while keeping a clean pocket for both of its quarterbacks to complete all six of their passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, James’ defense limited the Mustangs (0-2 Valley Oak League, 1-5 overall) to 82 yards and forced three turnovers in the shutout.
“For 25 years, they’ve been the best in the business,” Manteca coach Mark Varnum said of Eavenson and James. “To have them around and still doing this is just special, and I don’t think they’re anywhere near stopping. I told them this is a 25-year (celebration); this is not a retirement party. I love those guys to death, and they’re obviously still producing massive results.”
It was also senior night, and many Buffaloes got to play a part in the lopsided win after they staked a 42-0 lead 3 minutes into the second quarter. The reserves began to rotate in just minutes later.
“These guys work so hard,” Varnum said. “It’s a year-round thing for us, especially for these seniors that work their butts off. They got to eat tonight, and it was exciting. I’m super, super proud of them.”
The usual stars did their damage before making way for the reserves.
Washington State commit Jayden Harris intercepted two passes and scored on a 44-yard pass from Brody Carabello (4 of 4, 98 yards, 13-yard rushing TD). Twin brother Jaylin Harris (three catches, 48 yards) made a tough jump-ball grab in the corner of the end zone on an 18-yard toss from Johnny Santillanez Valdez (2 of 2, 26 yards) and later opened the second half with an 87-yard kickoff return for his second touchdown of the night.
“Like they say, we’re the twin towers,” the 6-foot-3 Jayden Harris said. “We’re unstoppable.”
Nikko Juarez, the program’s all-time leading rusher, added 65 yards and a touchdown and harassed Mountain House quarterbacks Brayden Carpenter and Bode Jacobsen on defense in his limited action.
Sophomore E.J. Johnson (three rushes, 42 yards) contributed two touchdown scampers, and Manny Lopez (three rushes, 17 yards) had one.
With the clock running for the entire second half, Manteca had just one play on offense — a 92-yard dash to the house by track standout William Brown IV. That was the final play of the game, and it was set up by a fumble recovery by Makail De La Rosa.
Mountain House threatened to end its touchdown-scoring drought on its lone possession of the second half, which lasted 18 plays. The Mustangs have now gone four consecutive games without a touchdown.
The Buffaloes are riding a streak of their own with the fourth straight victory, and they’ll meet the biggest roadblock in their quest for a VOL championship three-peat next week when Central Catholic visits Guss Schmiedt Field.
“I think our first two games (losses to powerhouses St. Francis and Buchanan) helped set us up for success in the long run,” Jayden Harris said. “We’re stronger for it, so we’re ready for whatever. We’re just coming in next week laser focused.”
