Manteca’s girls volleyball team suffered its first best-of-five loss of the season Monday, falling to reigning Valley Oak League champion Central Catholic 26-28, 25-22, 27-29, 20-25 in Modesto.

The Buffaloes (7-1 VOL, 19-3 overall) were without senior middle blocker Karlie Spohn for a second straight match, as she is nursing a sore hamstring. Central Catholic (4-1, 7-7), which has been missing standout outside hitter Abby Castillon, appears to be rounding into form following a seventh-match losing streak.

Manteca had chances to put away Games 1 and 3 but could not overcome its errors. The Buffs were led by double-doubles from Adrianna Powell (14 kills, 14 digs) and Camrenne Genilla (10 kills, 13 digs). Arielle Chandler distributed 37 assists while orchestrating the attack, and Abbey Kadillak anchored the defense with 30 digs along with a team-high four aces. Courtney Washburn, starting in place of Spohn, finished with 11 kills and five blocks.

Shelby Jackson spearheaded the host Raiders with 23 kills. Kate Grover added 38 assists and five aces. They also won the two lower-level matches via sweeps.
