NEW YORK (AP) — R.A. Dickey became the first major league pitcher in 24 years to throw consecutive one-hitters and Ike Davis hit a grand slam to lead the New York Mets past the Baltimore Orioles 5-0 on Monday night.

Coming off a one-hit gem at Tampa Bay last Wednesday, the knuckleballer struck out a career-high 13 and allowed only Wilson Betemit’s clean single in the fifth inning.

The previous pitcher to throw consecutive one-hitters was Dave Stieb for Toronto in September 1988, according to STATS LLC. The Mets said the last to do it in the National League was Jim Tobin with the Boston Braves in 1944, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau.

The 37-year-old Dickey (11-1) walked two and became the first 11-game winner in the majors.



YANKEES 6, BRAVES 2

NEW YORK (AP) — CC Sabathia struck out 10, Derek Jeter drove in three runs and the Yankees won their 10th straight game, beating the Braves.

Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano hit solo home runs as the Yankees matched their longest winning streak since May 2005.

The team with the AL’s best record kept rampaging in interleague play — all 10 of these triumphs have come against NL teams with winning records, including a sweep at Turner Field last week.

Michael Bourn led off the game with a triple and scored when Martin Prado followed with a groundout, ending Atlanta’s 20-inning shutout string. But the Braves’ first game at the new Yankee Stadium and first trip to the Bronx since 2006 still resulted in their seventh loss in eight tries.

Sabathia (9-3) gave up seven hits in his 34th career complete game, and first since last July. He walked one, and fanned Chipper Jones and Jason Heyward to finish it.

Mike Minor (3-5) took the loss.



GIANTS 5, ANGELS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Matt Cain followed up his perfect game by persevering through five difficult innings for another victory with the Giants’ 5-3 win over the Angels.

Ryan Theriot had three hits and drove in two runs for the Giants, who rewarded Cain (9-2) for his resilience in his first start since throwing the 22nd perfect game in major league history against Houston last Wednesday.

Four Giants relievers combined on four hitless innings, with Santiago Casilla finishing up for his 19th save in 20 chances. Counting Cain’s fifth inning, the Angels’ final 15 hitters failed to reach base.

Jerome Williams (6-5) gave up seven hits and four runs while failing to get out of the fourth inning in his third straight loss for the Angels — and his second straight defeat at Angel Stadium after going 8-0 in his first eight home starts with Los Angeles.

At some point after Williams left the game, the former Giants first-round pick was taken to a hospital as a precaution after complaining of shortness of breath.



INDIANS 10, REDS 9

CLEVELAND (AP) — Lonnie Chisenhall and Casey Kotchman had three RBIs apiece and Cleveland ended Cincinnati’s six-game winning streak.

Chisenhall and Kotchman hit two-run homers, and both drove in runs in the sixth inning off Sam LeCure (2-2) as Cleveland snapped a 7-7 tie.

Shin-Soo Choo homered for the Indians.

Joey Votto and Jay Bruce homered for the Reds, who swept a three-game series from the Indians last week.

Reliever Joe Smith (5-1) went 1 2-3 innings for the win. Chris Perez worked the ninth for his 22nd straight save.

Bruce and Brandon Phillips had three hits each for Cincinnati.



BREWERS 7, BLUE JAYS 6

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Aramis Ramirez’s liner down the left-field line was ruled a home run after umpires reversed a foul ball call using video replay in the seventh inning that snapped a tie and lifted the Brewers to a victory over the Blue Jays.

Ramirez hit a 1-2 pitch off rookie Robert Coello (0-1) that hit the outside corner of a yellow pad below the foul pole. Third base umpire Paul Nauert ruled it a foul ball. He agreed to check video replay after discussing the play with Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke and third base coach Ed Sedar while watching a fan dramatically pound the pad in question.

Umpires spent about 90 seconds checking the replay, before returning and signaling a home run for Ramirez, his eighth of the year.

Kameron Loe (4-2) was credited with the win despite allowing Jose Bautista to hit a game-tying three-run home run in the top of the seventh.



CUBS 12, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) — Bryan LaHair and Alfonso Soriano homered to lead the Chicago Cubs to a victory over the White Sox in the opener of the crosstown, interleague series.

With winds gusting to 41 mph the Cubs had season highs of five home runs, 15 hits and 12 runs.

Starlin Castro and Luis Valbuena homered and had three hits apiece for the Cubs and Geovany Soto added a solo shot in his first game back from the 15-day disabled list.

Matt Garza (3-5) allowed home runs to Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski, but limited the damage to three runs over six innings to earn the win.

Zack Stewart (1-2) was tagged for six runs and nine hits, including four homers, over 5 2-3 innings.



ASTROS 9, ROYALS 7

HOUSTON (AP) — Brian Bixler drove in a career-high three runs on three hits, including his first career homer, and Justin Maxwell and Brian Bogusevic also homered as the Astros held off the Royals.

J.A. Happ (5-7) yielded four hits and two runs in 6-plus innings to break a four-game losing streak. It was his first start since allowing 11 hits and eight runs — both career highs — in Houston’s 10-0 loss to San Francisco in which Matt Cain threw a perfect game.

Maxwell hit a two-run homer after Bogusevic’s solo shot in Houston’s five-run eighth inning.

Jonathan Sanchez (1-3) allowed six hits and four runs in six innings in his second start since a month-long stint on the disabled list with tendinitis in his left biceps.



DIAMONDBACKS 7, MARINERS 1

PHOENIX (AP) — Aaron Hill hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to become the fifth Arizona player to hit for the cycle, lifting the Diamondbacks to a win over the Mariners.

Hill hit a single in the first inning off Hector Noesi (2-8), added a triple in the third and a double off the Mariners starter in the fifth. He finished it off in style, hitting a one-out, solo homer off Shawn Kelley in the seventh for the majors’ second cycle this season. New York Mets outfielder Scott Hairston had the other one, against the Colorado Rockies on April 27

It was the first cycle by a Diamondbacks player since Kelly Johnson did it against San Francisco on July 23, 2010.

Wade Miley (8-3) got the win.



RANGERS 2, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) — David Murphy hit a two-run single in the first inning, Matt Harrison won his fifth straight decision and the Rangers beat the Padres for their fourth straight victory.

Harrison (9-3) tied CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova of the New York Yankees for the AL lead in victories. He allowed one run and six hits in six innings, struck out four and walked two.

Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton didn’t start but played left field as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning. Hamilton was released from a hospital Saturday after becoming dehydrated because of an intestinal virus. Manager Ron Washington said he expects Hamilton to start Tuesday night.

Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 14th save in 15 chances.

Jason Marquis (1-2) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings, struck out 10 and walked three.
