Ryan Allen needed a double to complete the cycle Monday night, but it was not needed, as his Northgate Red Sox jumped out early and held on late to defeat the Spreckels Park White Sox 7-6 in quarterfinal action of the District 67 Majors Tournament of Champions on Northgate’s Gillen Field.
The Red Sox got the game’s first five runs in the third inning with the big hit a two-RBI triple by Allen (3 for 3, three RBI, home run, triple), scoring Max Abrew (2 for 3, two RBI, run) and Izaias Rodriguez. Abrew had a two-RBI single to plate Noah Ruger and Andres Duque (RBI, run). Frank Hoffman (2 for 3, double, two runs) led off the inning with an infield single and came around to score on a wild pitch.
In the fourth inning, the first four White Sox batters reached and scored to narrow the gap to 6-5. Cody Foster, Lucas Medeiros (2 for 3, run) and Max Souza all singled and Anthony Rogers (2 for 2, RBI, double, three runs) doubled with Souza plating Foster and Rogers scoring Medeiros. Miguel Azdar singled in Souza and Rogers came in on a Gabriel Ramirez groundout.
Allen’s home run in the bottom of the fourth gave Northgate a much-needed insurance run and a 7-5 lead. Following a pair of walks and a Red Sox error, Christian Miramontes scored on a Tucker Davidson groundout in the top of the seventh to draw Spreckels Park within 7-6. A strikeout then ended the game.
After Allen’s two-out home run, Davidson switched from catcher to pitcher retired all four batters he faced behind three strikeouts to end the game.
