Eighth grade promotion events around the Manteca Unified School District were family affairs. Shown is a Joshua Cowell School graduate with her family.

The present for eighth graders at Lathrop Elementary School was Tuesday’s promotion ceremony.

Ahead is high school, where many here will go from being Lathrop Warrior to a Lathrop High Spartan as the future Class of 2027.

Ninety-six students were honored at the special afternoon event held in the school gymnasium. Another 25 made the 3.5 GPA or Higher Honor Roll.

And then there was the 4.0 Honor Roll, consisting of Fernanda De La Rocha Perez, Jonathan Estabillo, Jennifer Jiang, Kailee Moua, Taylor Rios, Erik Rodriguez, Victor Salazar, Dhynxzhien Tajan, and Valeria Villapando.

The promotion ceremony featured eighth grader Michael Torres leading in the flag salute along with the welcoming speech, Principal Anita Tillotson providing the introductions, teacher Joseph Rasmussen presenting the class officers, Diana Nevarez and Pamela Tavarez announcing the character and achievement awards, and Asalia Huitron recognizing those students with honor cords.

Student speaker was Class President Eli Perez Morales.

Woodward School

About 100 students were honored at Walter Woodward Elementary School’s promotion event.

The Tuesday afternoon program for the Class of 2023 had the school band performing the processional and recessional, the Manteca High JROTC color guards providing the presentation of colors, the school choir doing the singing of the National Anthem, and Principal Heather Thomson welcoming and presenting the eighth graders for the Presentation of Certificates.

Student speakers were Alexander Khizeran and Gianna Ruiz.

Forty-three students made the Honor Roll (3.0 to 3.9 GPAs). Of that, seven achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs during all three trimesters – listed here were Mateo Ceja, Mara Edwards, Kyle Fetterley, Kaylin Hang, Skyla Matutis, Colin Nguyen, and Harleen Sandhu.

Joshua Cowell School

The promotion Class of 2023 at Joshua Cowell School consisted of about 60 members.

More than half were on the honor rolls – they had 3.0 GPA or better, or 3.5 GPA or better for the entire school year – with seven achieving the 4.0 Honor Roll.

Maria Faria, James Friddle-Ripley, Gabby Leon, Princessia Morsay, Hugo Rendon, Mariajose Tejeda Zapata, and Felicity Villafan earned top academic honors.

Hanna Palacio and William Fisher led in the Pledge of Allegiance while Antonia Morris performed the National Anthem.

Promotion speeches were given by Zari Harris, Julissa Leon, Susana Corona Ramirez, Liliana Rios, Gabby Leon, and Izabella Cano.

Principal Stacy Valencia and Vice Principal Heather Gutierrez announced the special awards.
