Ripon council member may resign from office

The Ripon City Council will meet this morning to discuss a possible resignation of one its own along with steps for filling that vacancy.

No name was posted in the agenda for the 10:30 session in the Council Chamber, 259 N. Wilma Ave.

Mayor Daniel de Graaf, as required by California State Law, called for the special meeting.

The last time Council was left having to fill a vacancy was with the sudden passing of Elden “Red” Nutt in 2014.

He had two years left in his term.

Back then, City Administrator Kevin Werner said: “Government Code provides that if a vacancy occurs, the council must fill the vacancy by appointing a new council member within 60 days (from the commencement of the vacancy) or call for a special election.”

Elected leaders appointed Mark Winchell, who had served eight years on the Ripon Planning Commission, In January 2015. He emerged from highly qualified of seven candidates, getting nod via balloting process by Council.
