Ripon establishes policy for donations to various city parks

The City of Ripon has a policy in place for anyone in the public looking to make a donation or improvement to any of the existing parks including Wilma Park.

The Ripon City Council approved a resolution on the Parks and Recreation Donation Process.

This policy allows the public to make donations whether it’s monetary or that of trees, plants, benches, painting of bleachers, leveling of baseball fields, adding disc golf or basketball courts, to name a few.

Elected leaders gave their OK to the resolution with the added language on an appeal process for donations under $10,000.

City Administrator Kevin Werner noted at the Dec. 14 monthly session that this will give “the option to appeal to the City Council if the Parks & Recreation Committee rejected or approved a donation.”

He added: “It can now be appealed from both sides.”

In recent years, the City has received more and more interest from those in the public on making donations or improvements to the parks around town.

Recreation Director Kye Stevens said at the November meeting that each time the City received such request, staff would determine on a case-by-case basis on how to best handle the process.

This led to talks of formalizing a policy in order to provide some consistency.

The plan in place also needed to be consistent and beneficial to the park site, according to Stevens.

Any structural add-ons to the park would still need approval from the Planning Commission.
