ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Christian Dell'Osso, River Islands golf
AOW Christian Dell'Osso

The Riptide junior played at Micke Grove Golf Links last Wednesday, April 29 for just the second time in his “off and on” golf career.

And he came up two strokes shy of the course record.

Dell’Osso capped off his commanding campaign in the Central California Athletic Alliance with a stunning 9-under-par 63. He came into the league final having won the previous four events and came out of it as the reigning two-time champion.

The first time Dell’Osso had ever took on Micke Grove was in the 2025 CCAA Championship. He shot 1 under and managed to outdo himself in a big way in his return visit to the Lodi track.

“I was able to hit it solid off the tee box with the driver and put myself in good positions,” Dell’Osso said. “I hit a lot of good chip shots and wedge shots from 50-100 yards out that I stuck close to the pin, and I made a lot of putts that led to birdies.”

Ten birdies, to be exact. Against just one bogey.

“I only played it one other time, and I played well there last year,” Dell’Osso said. “Both times, I played pretty good, that day (last Wednesday) just so happened to be one of those rounds.”

He was perhaps due for a big breakout after a consistent regular season in nine-whole tournaments.

In the CCAA opener, he carded a 1-under 30 at River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres. Dell’Osso won again a week later at Ripon Golf Club, River Islands’ home course, with a 2-over 33. That was followed by a 5-over 41 at Tracy Golf & Country Club and 1-over 37 at Elkhorn Golf Club.

“He is an excellent putter and an incredibly long hitter able to push the ball 300 yards in tournament off the tees,” Riptide coach Jeff Kleiner said.

Not bad for a multi-sport athlete who doesn’t touch his clubs months at a time. A standout receiver on the school’s football team, Dell’Osso devotes a big part of the year to fine-tuning his skills on the gridiron. He didn’t even play high school golf his freshman year.

“My first sport was baseball, but I started to play golf when I was young,” Dell’Osso said. “It’s been off and on since then. I play football, too, so I usually take breaks (from golf) for that and pick it back up in November.”

For now, football can wait.

Dell’Osso’s next goal is to qualify for the SJS Masters Tournament for the first time. Next Monday, he’ll be joined by teammate Elias Tualla for the SJS Division VI Tournament at River Oaks Golf Course in Nicolaus. The team champion of the tournament and five individuals advance to Masters. Last year, Dell’Osso placed 11th.

“I’m a lot more confident this year and have definitely improved from last year,” Dell’Osso said. “Coming off that round (at Micke Grove) and going into this one, I’m hoping to use that (momentum) and make it past divisionals and get into Masters.”
