Devi Coglio scored 10 of Sierra’s 12 third-quarter points Monday which helped the host Timberwolves pull away in a 37-28 non-league girls basketball win over Ripon.
“We did a good job in the second half,” Sierra coach Martha Spivey said. “We were focused and ready to go.
“I think that something that has been lacking in previous games is the intensity from halftime – what we talked about to doing it on the court.”
Coglio finished with 12 points along with six rebounds – four in the third quarter – and a steal.
“I had a different mentality in the second half,” Coglio said. “The first half I was a little timid because I picked up two fouls kind of quick so I was a little scared to play in the first half, but in the second half I played my game.”
Kayla Wilson flirted with a double-double for the Timberwolves (4-5), scoring nine points and making nine rebounds along with four steals and three assists.
Sierra dominated the boards 46-31 with Lindsey Walljasper (eight points) pulling down 17 rebounds along with two blocks, a steal and an assist.
“My job is to get the rebounds and try and get them back up for the easy baskets,” Walljasper said. “And that is what I was trying to do.”
The Indians (4-5) trailed by 12 points going into the fourth quarter and closed to within seven points with a minute left, but five consecutive missed free throws put a damper on the Ripon comeback.
“We battled, but we have to be able to finish some of the shots we have at the basket,” Ripon coach George Contente said. “When we finally were able to get a rebound we had some put-backs that wouldn’t go in.
“One thing about the kids I have, they will keep battling and battling.”
Jill Jamero had eight points and five rebounds for the Indians, and teammate Mia Van Lewen added six points and seven rebounds.
