The Playbox Theatre Ensemble at East Union HIgh School is staging William Shakespeare’s Hamlet tonight as well as May 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. in the Playbox Theatre.
This timeless battle of corruption and justice, adapted especially for young audiences by senior Joey Lyon, is directed by theatre teacher Annette Taser.
Trimmed from the original four hours to two, this version of Hamlet was created by AP English student Joey Lyon as part of an independent study with Mr. Bradford Edom. The interpretation and its setting provide a unique blend of classic style and modern elements. Set in the shadowy underworld of a 1920s New York mafia speakeasy, this adaptation preserves the integrity of Shakespearean language while highlighting the power struggle between family members as Laertes, Claudius, and Hamlet wrestle with their consciences. Tension unfolds in Little Denmark - a world that balances Danish culture with American history and Elizabethan language.
Leading the cast of Hamlet is senior Joey Lyon in the title role with Kaite Wallace as Ophelia. Jacob Garcia embodies the sinister Claudius and Gertrude is played by Dakota Garber. Other featured ensemble members are Aaron Flores as Polonius and the Ghost of Hamlet’s father, Sadaf Ahrari as Polonia, Ben Alfter as Horatio, and Steven Amaral as Laertes.
The cast also includes Breanna Stengel (Rosencrantz), Jordyn Owens (Guildenstern), Ryan Keathley (Marcellus), Chris Torres (Bernardo), Tiffany Mack and Chelsea Paslay (Gravediggers), Qualyn Dixon (the Player), Alyssa Montantes (Player Queen), Angelia Gordon (Luciana), Erin Rehkopf (Priestess), Brittany Vernon (Messenger), Ashley Duval (Osrique), Dallas Arp, and Mae Yang (Speakeasy Hostesses.)
