Pedestrian flashers coming to Spreckels Avenue at the Norman Drive crosswalk

Manteca Councilman Gary Singh activates flashers at the crosswalk by Manteca High along Moffat Boulevard at Garfield Avenue

Crosswalk warning flashers are being placed at the pedestrian crossing of Spreckels Avenue at Norman Drive near the Target store this summer.

Mayor Gary Singh noted staff, to save money, did not initially install them when the pedestrian island and high profile crosswalk was put in place last year.

That was so city crews could repurpose the existing pedestrian activated flashers on Moffat Boulevard at Garfield Avenue by Manteca High.

Those signs and flashers will be placed on Spreckels Avenue now that the HAWK pedestrian signals — shorthand for high visibility activated signals — are in the final stages of being installed at Moffat and Garfield. They are similar to ones already on North Main at Edison Street.

The Spreckels pedestrian crossing at the T-intersection with Norman Drive is problematic due to speeds on the heavily traveled arterial as well as the configuration of the street.

To the south, there is a semi-blind curve at which Phoenix Drive T-intersects with Spreckels Avenue.

The entrance to the Target parking lot is just to the north.

Singh led city efforts to convince Prologis to install traffic signals at Phoenix Drive and Spreckels when they build a 289,449 square-foot distribution center with a 10,000 square-foot office on 14 acres between J&M Equipment and the American Modular Systems plant.

The distribution center will have 49 loading docks, 83 truck parking stalls, and 184 vehicle parking spaces.

Prologis will build the structure when they secure a tenant.
