Rummage sale, car wash today helps EU track team

The East Union High track team is hosting a combination car wash, rummage sale and recycling drive today from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise money for the track program that has been impacted by the budget cutbacks.

Head Coach Todd Dunaway is hoping that the combination of team unity and community involvement will help offset the costs of equipment, uniforms, and paying to get into invitational meets that help the team prepare for both their run in the Valley Oak League and the postseason.

“It’s something that has become more severe this year, and it’s nobody’s fault – it’s just the status of our society,” said Dunaway of the financial climate. “If we can do something to help the program that’s different than individually selling things then that’s something that can benefit the team two-fold.

“I think that a fundraiser like this that takes all-hands on deck is probably better in the long run for team spirit and unity than something like selling cookie dough.”

The concept came after parents Terry and Kurtis Hauck – whose daughter Jerrica is on the team – learned of the fiscal difficulties facing the program.

They shot Dunaway an e-mail with several suggestions to help raise money, and before too long the date and the location were cast in stone.

While it’s slightly out of the ordinary for team fundraisers, Dunaway – who says that those on the team that don’t show up better have a good excuse – feels that it could be the start of something good for the program.

“We’re all going to be out there, and we’re all going to be having a good time,” he said. “I’m sure there will be a few water fights, so we’ll have to make sure not to have the rummage sale set-up next to the car wash.”

At 8 a.m., members of the track-and-field program will be on hand to accept aluminum cans and plastic bottles as well as man the rummage sale booth. Through 2 p.m., car washes will run $5. All proceeds will benefit the track program. Individual donations can also be given. Checks to the program can be made out to East Union Track and Field.
