ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Gabbi Ilardi, Ripon girls golf
Bulletin sports fall 2021
Gabbi Ilardi

Ilardi repeated as medalist of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V on Oct. 28, shooting an even 72 at Yolo Fliers Club.

The RHS junior wasn’t just after personal glory, however. With her encouragement, the Indians claimed the team title with a 462 score. They outshot runner-up Colfax (491) by nearly 30 strokes.

“That round was fun,” Ilardi said. “I told the girls there’s a chance we can pull this off so just try your best. I played the course two weeks before in a junior tournament, so I was pretty confident going in.

“I just played my game, and it was super cool for the rest of the girls to come out with the win. I was so proud of them. Of course, I wanted to play well to win it again, but it was cool as a team for us to do that.”

The team championship is the second in program history, both under head coach Eric Dambrosio. He believes Ilardi is the best player to come out of the Valley Foothill League North Division during his time as coach. She’s a two-time league MVP, and Ripon has won five VFL championships in the last five years.

“As far as I can remember, she’s the only girl in our league to shoot under par (in an 18-hole league tournament),” Dambrosio said, referencing her 1-under 71 carded Sept. 20 at Manteca Park Golf Course during the VFL North’s mid-season tournament.

“She hits the ball really well, she putts really well, she just does everything really well,” he added. “Just an amazing player all-around.”

Ilardi and the Indians played their final round this Monday in the SJS Masters Championship held at The Reserve at Spanos Park. She finished 7-over 79, improving by four strokes from her 2019 appearance as a freshman.
