“Diego is our libero,” Lathrop coach Toa Fa’ali’i said. “Working with him on his platform and his technique has really worked out for him.

“This has been a long off-season, and I am just happy we get to come out and play. It’s good to see us come out here and execute what we work on in practice.”

Christian Green led the offense for the Spartans (3-0) with 15 kills and 10 digs.

“We had a hard-fought game against McNair two days ago,” Green said. “And Manteca has been like our rival, so it was good to come out and get a ‘w’ against them.”

Lathrop’s Tory Sumbler was busy setting up his hitters with 30 assists along with seven digs and four kills.

“Tonight was really good,” Sumbler said. “We were really efficient with our passing, and we were making sure we had a really good first contact.”

Jerico Santillan (10 kills, five digs), Arman John (six kills, six digs) and Christopher Millan (13 digs) rounded out the Spartans attack.

The Buffaloes (2-1) were competitive in the first and third sets, trailing 13-9 in the first set before Lathrop ended it on a 12-6 run and in the third, they were behind 12-10 to see the Spartans close it out on a 12-7 run.

The second set was a different story. Lathrop blitzed out to a 13-2 lead and never let up, scoring 12 of the set’s final 16 points.

“We got to see one of the best teams in the area,” Manteca coach Jennifer Reis said. “They are quick, and they control the ball really well.

“It helps us to know that we are good, but we have a lot of growing to get to that next level.”

Angel Rodriguez paced the Buffaloes with five kills. Daniel Pedroza added three kills and Jon Rosas posted nine assists.
