WESTON RANCH – When the Weston Ranch Cougars opened their half of the seventh inning grabbing a Valley Oak League win seemed slim, but a ferocious last-inning comeback pushed Weston Ranch to a 6-5 come-from-behind win Friday.
The Cougars (3-6 VOL, 7-11 overall) cashed in a highlight reel final at bat, concluding with Desirae Fonoti’s game-winning single to give the Cougars the win.
“After how things have unfolded the past few games, to see my girls come out and compete like this makes me more proud of them than at any point this season,” Weston Ranch head coach Melanie Berezay said. “That had every opportunity to give up this game, but they decided to fight together as a team and things worked out for us.”
Weston Ranch trailed 5-3 going into the final frame, but the squads’ best inning in four games gave Reianna Dominguez a complete game victory, and provided the squad with the best feeling they’ve experienced in awhile.
“This was a good feeling for a lot of our girls,” Berezay said of the win. “It has to feel good to see yourself compete with all you have and be capable of pulling out a close win.
“This is something that we’ve been building up to our entire season.”
DeArbia Gardner paced the Cougars going 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Raileen Romo finished the contest 2 for 4. Miranda Holmes mashed an RBI triple and Fonoti went 2 for 4 with the game’s most valuable hit.
The Cougars will try and continue to roll in the right direction when they battle with Manteca High Monday at Manteca.
Jackie Ketner handled the pitching duties, tossing four innings of three-hit softball. Ketner surrendered the one run and struck out five before giving way to Kourtni McCall in the final inning.
Offensively, East Union (8-1, 16-4) had outbursts from up and down the line up, with Cassie Waggy leading the way with a 3 for 4 day including a game-high four RBIs. Brittany LaMar and sophomore Kelsee Emerson both went 3 for 4 as well, with LaMar driving in three.
Jillian Goulart was 2 for 2 and scored thre runs, while Tori Souza put together a solid performance, going 2 for 2 with a bunt single and a laser off the third base bag.
McCall was 2 for 4 at the plate and teammate Cherie DeJesus was 2 for 3. McCall drove in three with her two hits.
The Lancers will now prepare for their rematch with Oakdale. East Union narrowly pulled out the two squads’ last meeting 5-4, but will get to enjoy the comfortable confines of its home part this time around.
“We’re slowly getting ready for Monday night,” East Union head coach Brian Goulart said. “It’s a very big game and we are excited about it.
“You look forward to playing in a game that really matters.”
