Martin, Omega win world team time trial

FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Tony Martin powered Omega Pharma-Quick Step to its second consecutive title in the team time trial as the road cycling world championships opened Sunday.

Omega edged Orica Greenedge by 0.81 seconds over the 35-mile route from Montecatini Terme to Florence, finishing in 1 hour, 4 minutes, 16.81 seconds.

Martin teamed with Sylvain Chavanel of France, Michal Kwiatkowski of Poland, Niki Terpstra of the Netherlands, Kristof Vandewalle of Belgium and Peter Velits of Slovakia.

Specialized-Lululemon defended its title in the women’s event. Lisa Brennauer and Trixi Worack of Germany, Katie Colclough of Britain, Carmen Small and Evelyn Stevens of the United States and Eleonora van Dijk of the Netherlands finished in 51:10.69 along the 27-mile route from Pistoia to Florence.

Rabo finished a distant second, 1:11.09 seconds behind, and Orica-AIS was third.
